Our Introduction to Black & White Photography course is a three week intensive course led by an experienced creative professional. The course will teach you about camera functions, choosing the correct type and speed of film, shutter speeds, and working under differing lighting conditions and introduce you to the basics of film processing and printing techniques. Each participant shares an enlarger with one other person. This ensures that you get plenty of hands-on experience while also giving you the opportunity to learn from your fellow students.

Is this course for me?
This course is ideal for everyone from absolute beginners who don’t quite know what those knobs and numbers do, to those who would like to learn how to process film and make their own prints. This course introduces you to your manual camera controls, choosing the right film, getting the correct exposures, enlarging lenses and accessories, film processing, good darkroom practices and printing your own prints

What do you need to bring?
A camera: To get the most from this course we would advise that you will need access to a camera. If you have a camera, please bring it (ideally a fully manual 35mm SLR camera). If you don’t yet own one and would like advice on what to get, your course tutor will be happy to advise you. Please note: we do not provide cameras for course participants.

Film: In order to get off to a flying start, we recommend that you bring an exposed (i.e. used) film of traditional black and white 35mm film, shot on even the most basic point and shoot camera. Please ask our helpful staff when you book your course place for advice on which film type to purchase. Notes and guidelines will be available for you, but you may find it useful to bring a pen and notebook.

What do we supply?
The Gallery will supply all chemicals, enlargers, enlarging lens and photographic paper for the first weeks of the course. As you begin to experiment with printing you may want to purchase different types of paper.

Where does the course take place?
This course is held in the Gallery of Photography suite of darkrooms, which are located in the basement of our building in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Our darkroom facilities include; film processing room, Black & White darkroom catering for all formats from 35mm to 5″x4″. The darkroom is available to Gallery of Photography members for hire, they are communal facilities offered at non-commercial subsidised rates.
